Lake Volta & Akosombo
The dam, the river and a day on the water
A day on the water
The Akosombo Dam holds back the Volta to form a lake that reaches far into the north of the country. Below the dam, at Atimpoku, the river runs wide and slow under the Adomi Bridge, and fishermen work from narrow canoes.
We use Akosombo as a pause between Accra and the highlands: a boat out onto the lake, an afternoon by the water, fresh fish for dinner. (to verify)
Why go
It breaks the drive east into two easy halves, and the lake is a fine place to see how the country lives with its water: fishing, ferries and islands that were once hilltops.
