Kakum at first light
Kakum & the Central forests
Kakum canopy at first light, with birding
The canopy walkway at opening time, before the groups, with a birding guide; optional forest walks for specialists.
Kakum's canopy walkway hangs between giant trees above the forest floor. Most visitors cross it mid-morning in a crowd. We arrange to be there at opening time with a birding guide, when it is cooler and the forest is busy with birds.
Keen birders can add guided walks on the forest trails, where the target list includes species that are hard to see elsewhere in West Africa. We plan these with specialist guides.
What it involves
- The walkway sways and is high off the ground. It is safe and netted, but not for anyone with a strong fear of heights.
- The walk up to the start is steep in places. Allow two to three hours in total.
- The walkway can close in heavy rain or for maintenance. We check before you travel.
