Akwasidae at Manhyia, Kumasi
A Sunday at the Asante court, when the Asantehene sits in state at Manhyia Palace to receive chiefs and the public, with a guide who explains the protocol.
Akwasidae is a ceremony of the Akan calendar, which runs in cycles of 42 days. On Akwasidae Sunday the Asantehene receives chiefs, elders and visitors at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, with drumming, horns, umbrellas and the paying of homage.
Visitors are welcome, and the experience is better with someone beside you who can explain who is arriving, why they sit where they sit, and what the drums are saying. We pair it with the Manhyia Palace Museum on another day, so the ceremony makes sense against the history.
What it involves
- The ceremony runs for several hours in the late morning and early afternoon, mostly outdoors under awnings. Seating is on chairs; bring water and a hat.
- Dress modestly. Our guide will tell you how to greet and when to stand. Do not cross between the Asantehene and those he is addressing.
- Photography rules are set by the palace on the day; some moments are not to be photographed. We follow them and ask you to do the same.
- Akwasidae dates follow the 42-day cycle. We confirm each date with the palace before we build a trip around it.
