Makers' circuit: kente, adinkra, carvers and Kejetia

A day or two among the craft towns around Kumasi: kente weavers at Bonwire, adinkra stamping at Ntonso, woodcarvers at Ahwiaa, and Kejetia market with a trader as guide.

The villages around Kumasi are known for crafts that have been practised for generations. At Bonwire, weavers work narrow strip looms to make kente, which is sewn together into cloth. At Ntonso, dye is made from bark and symbols are stamped onto cloth with carved calabash stamps. At Ahwiaa, carvers shape stools, figures and combs.

We visit makers in their workshops rather than at showrooms, and we introduce you as guests, not customers. You can buy, and many people do, but there is no obligation. In Kumasi itself, a market trader takes you through Kejetia's lanes.

What it involves

  • Short drives between villages, each visit an hour or two. Workshops are small and often outdoors.
  • Kente and adinkra symbols carry meanings. Our guides explain them with care, and we do not use them as decoration on this site.
  • Kejetia is very crowded and hot. We go early, keep the visit short, and keep valuables light.
