Beads and cocoa: Krobo glass beads, an Akuapem cocoa farm and Aburi

An easy loop north of Accra: a Krobo bead workshop, a cocoa farm on the Akuapem Ridge where Ghana's cocoa story starts, and the botanical gardens at Aburi.

In the Krobo towns, beads are made from recycled glass, crushed to powder, packed into clay moulds and fired. A workshop visit lets you watch every stage, and try your hand at it.

On the Akuapem Ridge we visit a cocoa farm to see pods ripen and beans ferment, and hear how cocoa came to Ghana. We finish under the trees of Aburi's botanical gardens.

What it involves

  • Short drives on good roads; an easy day trip from Accra, or one night in the hills.
  • Bead kilns are hot. Wear closed shoes.
  • Krobo bead markets are held on set days of the week; we plan around them.
