The heritage route, coast and inland

Cape Coast and Elmina castles with a Ghanaian historian, the ancestral river at Assin Manso, and, for those who want the whole story, Salaga, Pikworo and the walls of Gwollu in the north.

The transatlantic slave trade did not begin at the coast. Captives were taken in raids and wars far inland, marched south through markets such as Salaga, and held in the castles until the ships came. Most visitors see only the last chapter. This route follows more of it, at a pace that leaves room to take it in.

On the coast we visit Cape Coast and Elmina on separate days with a historian, and Assin Manso, where captives were bathed in the river before the final march. Inland, the optional northern chapter adds the old market at Salaga, the rock camp at Pikworo near Paga, and the defence walls that the people of Gwollu built against raiders.

What it involves

  • Each castle tour takes around one and a half to two hours on foot, including time inside the dungeons, which are dark and close. There are steps and uneven floors.
  • Guides speak plainly about what happened here. Some visitors find it overwhelming; you can step out at any point, and our guide will wait with you.
  • We leave the afternoon after each castle visit free. If you want a quiet space, a walk on the beach or a meal with no schedule, it is there.
  • Photography is allowed in most areas; we ask everyone to leave cameras down in the dungeons. Children are welcome; we discuss with parents beforehand what the tour includes.
  • The northern sites involve long drives and simple stays. We plan rest days between them.
