Volta highlands
Waterfalls, forest hills and a village that protects its monkeys Illustration
Cooler air, and a long walk to the falls
East of Lake Volta the land rises into forested hills along the border with Togo. Villages here are Ewe-speaking, the air is cooler at night, and the days are made for walking.
The walk to the lower falls at Wli follows a stream through forest; Mount Afadjato is a steep climb with a view over two countries; and at Tafi Atome the community protects a troop of mona monkeys in a patch of sacred forest. (to verify) (to verify) (to verify)
Why go
After Accra and the coast, the highlands are the place to slow down. Guesthouses are small, the walking is good, and the evenings are quiet. Pair them with Lake Volta for a week out of the capital.
