Accra: galleries, Jamestown, Teshie coffins and highlife
A walk through Jamestown, time in contemporary galleries, the figurative coffin workshops of Teshie, and a night of live highlife. In August, Chale Wote fills the streets.
Accra's art scene is one of the most exciting in West Africa, and much of it is open to visitors who come with an introduction. We plan a day around galleries and studios that fits your interests, from established names to young artists.
In Jamestown, a local guide walks you from the lighthouse down to the fishing harbour and through the old Ga quarter. In Teshie, workshops build figurative coffins in the shape of fish, cars, cocoa pods or whatever the deceased loved. In the evening, we find you a band.
What it involves
- Mostly short drives and walks. Accra traffic is the main constraint, so we plan by neighbourhood.
- Jamestown is a living, working neighbourhood. Ask before photographing people; our guide will help.
- Gallery openings and live music change week to week; we confirm what is on closer to your dates.
